Though one Gruppe was committed to intensive operations over Rumania and Italy in 1943 and 1944, the main operational theatre for this fighter unit was the Reich itself where its pilots fought against four-engined bomber formations and their escort. The losses were heavy, and, in the case of the second Gruppe, a special unit called a Sturmgruppe was formed, principally composed of pilots ready to ram the bombers.
